Previously, Miss Goodwin had used electric storage heating with a Scottish Power Economy 7 tariff to heat her small house at the high cost of £20 per week. The housing association proposed improvements to the heating system of the home resulting in a reduction in heating bills from £80 per month to £18.70 per month. The saving of approximately 75% is not untypical when replacing electric heating systems with an air source heat pump.

The system installed in the house was a combination of a 8kW HeatKing air source heat pump, new radiators, solar panels and a 165 litre hot water cylinder. The heat pump was wall mounted at the rear of the property with a drip tray. In addition to the new system a monitoring device was connected to the cylinder coils to record the performance of the new installation enabling accurate measurements.
