The Kirklees project just a few miles from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is improving the lives of many housing association residents and was recognised and visited by the Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn MP in July 2009. Previously, all of the properties were fitted with electric storage heaters resulting in high energy bills and the other disadvantages of storage heating. Completed in 2008, the installations took place in two phases with 60 units being installed in total. For the residents it proved to be a huge success and they were delighted with the flexibility and low cost of the units.
For each property a full wet system was installed throughout. The HeatKing air source heat pumps were floor mounted on concrete bases and situated to the rear of each property, four back up heating boost heaters were also installed. The boost heaters were only expected to be used on the rare occasion where heating was needed and the outside temperature was below -5°C. The Energy Officer overseeing all installations said that 'so delighted were the residents with the air source heat pump and lower fuel costs that many said it had changed their lives'.
